Intro
America Chavez is a hero who I don’t know a lot about. So, when given the opportunity to review ‘America Chavez: Made in The USA #1’ I jumped at the chance. From the first issue, It seems like I was right to be excited for the solo outing of the young heroine. With Kalinda Vazquez is great writing to Carlos Gomez’s expressive art style this book stands out as one of the best new books by Marvel.
Plot
This first issue gives the reader a re-fresher course on America’s history. Showing us where she came from and how she has turned into a hero with powerful abilities. However, after fighting alongside the rest of the West Coast Avengers, America must rush against the clock to save her family. I don’t want to spoil the issue here so this review will be light on spoilers.
Writing
Although not experienced in the comic World Kalinda Vazquez’s writing is great, having relatable female characters who have fantastic dialogue that flows really well. Vasquez’s background on TV shows such as ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and ‘Prison Break’ really shows in this first issue. The use of flashbacks intercut with present events is highly effective in presenting the reader with America’s origins. The use of caption boxes through the entire issue serve as a sinister narrator to the events unfolding, setting up the potential big bad for the who is out to get America.
Vazquez’s dialogue for American and the supporting cast in the issue is brilliant. From the first appearance of America, we get a witty and powerful character who is charming and optimistic. Even in a battle against giant moles. However, as the issue progresses Vazquez’s shows that America is not all quips and catchphrases but a character who can be serious when the time comes. Fellow West Coast Avengers Kate Bishop and Ramone Watts, are written with a free-flowing witty banter, that you’d expect from a young team of heroes. There’s also a surprise cameo, from everyone’s favourite neighbourhood hero, who doesn’t feel out of place in the issue, and has some fun dialogue with America.
Overall, Vazquez sets a tone and sticks with it building an excellent narrative for the rest of the series to come. Her interpretation of various characters is also spot on with a fun approach to the character of America Chavez that makes for a great series lead.
Art
Carlos Gomez’s art is stunning, with expressive character art and some great dynamic set pieces throughout the issue, showing their artistic depth very well. Paired with the colouring skills of Jesus Aburtov, the issue has excellent visuals that have the reader hooked on the page.
Overall
If there is one thing I would say before I finish this review it is to buy this first issue! Although I did my best, I personally don’t feel I did the creative team of Vazquez, Gomez and Aburtov justice on their fantastic first issue. ‘America Chavez: Made in the USA’ is one of the most exciting new books to come out of Marvel’s 2021 slate and I can’t wait to see what’s next from the young hero.
